Small Hole - Big Leak! Sailing HideAway

When a leak is discovered the temptation is to look for large intrusions.
The logic, if any, is that if the amount of water in the bilge is large, several gallons in our case, then the leak entrance point must be of the same magnitude.

Big Leaks Are Easy To Find

When we broke a thru hull several miles off the coast of Sarasota. Florida, the difficulty was easy to find.  That's why it was so perplexing to find gallons of water in Hideaway's deep bilge but no obvious path of flow.

Small Leaks Question Your Sanity

We were able to determine the leak(s) were not in the bow region by observation and no detection of moisture in the bins.  Hideaway is on a trailer these days, so we changed the bow height.  No help, in fact it seemed to make the leaks worst.  Boats are designed to float on their water lines, we reasoned, therefore, we dropped the the trailer tongue to about a foot off the ground.  The trailer was now level to ground. This helped. The leak dripped on.

How the Water Flows

The design of  most boats, including ours, drains water from bow to the coamings with the rest going through the cockpit scuppers.  The coamings direct the water over the side.  We noticed at that point of egress the water would pond around the Bimini and sail tracks.  While the sail tracks were leaking a little, it was deemed not enough to explain the gallons of water residing in our bilge. We rebedded both anyway.    No help.

Someone suggested the gas line running from the outboard through the transom would allow a path for the water to follow along the gas line. The gas line goes through the wide transom via a plastic pipe.  On the Hideaway, hull #2, even if the pipe leaked the water would drain through the scuppers.

Online research revealed that Com Pac sailboat scuppers are subject to leaking at the various plastic  pipe joints and elbows. Hull #2 has no plastic plumbing elbows.  The scupper pipes, while plastic, are bonded into large fiberglass fittings.  No sign of leaks.  I rebedded the pipes at their transom exit points even though they showed no sign of leaks.

We plugged the scuppers and flooded the cockpit several times to no avail.  The water level did not recede over night.  We sprayed the boat with a hose aiming a hard stream at suspicious places.  No Leaks.  We removed the rub rail and recaulked possible entrance points. Again no progress.

Eventually We Accepted Our Situation

The bilge water, according to my scientific taste test, was most definitely fresh. We pumped before and after sailing. The bilge was always dry.  This is not a salt water problem.  The boat is not in danger of sinking because of these leaks.

Then One Summer's Day

A hard summer storm moved though, rocking the boat on its trailer and trapping me below decks.  I noticed a small trickle of water coming from under the caulking on the port side hull to deck joint.  The caulking bulged.  I pressed the bubble and to my complete surprise water squirted out!  I had found the leak at last!
SV Hideaway Hull/Deck Leak

The initial hole was about 1/16" but the water gathered between the exterior caulk and interior caulk then built up enough to slowly seep through the hull/deck joint, the water eased behind the partial bulkhead between the bunks and cockpit storage, then into the bilge.  For the watery details see my SVHideaway video  My Leak Has a Boat In It

One could certainly argue that because an over abundance of  expense caulking is present perhaps some of the problem was caused by the owner.   Yes, but, we won't, will we?

You won't believe where  we found the next leak in the attached video  Small Hole Big Leak

Sailing HideAway How to Make a Mast Crutch for Compac 23 Sailboat

One of the issues involved in mast raising or lowering is where the mast rests in-between.

The stern rail and the cabin top mast rest are not sufficient for this intermediate step.

The forces involved to raise the mast from the stern rail will test your bravery.   Thirty degrees seems to be the magic angle the mast has to be for safe and easy raising.  To accomplish this somebody of strong will has to balance the heavy mast on his shoulders while another brave soul winches the mast up.  Dropping, or to be more positive - lowering - the mast is just as critical.

Clearly a new invention is necessary.

The weak point in the process is how to support the mast at the stern.  One way to solve the problem is to remove the rudder and use the gudgeons to insert a long pole with pintles with a roller attached on top. This involves welding.  Not a skill the Hideaways possess.    Not to mention the difficulty removing, storing, and reinstallation of the rudder and tiller.  T'ain't gonna work!

My solution, comes from something I found in the inner consciousness of our world. (internet).  Using a pencil held at arms length while standing twenty feet form the beam I estimated 30 degrees and thus the height the mast crutch the Hideaway, a Com-Pac 23, requires.

The attached Sailing Hideaway video describes the building process, however, as of this writing, I have no idea if it works. Proceed with caution, should you decide to try this solution.

A Ladder's Last Step

I had just removed my new Lithium iron phosphate battery from its throne below decks with the intent of taking it home to charge.

Small, less than a quarter size of the lead acid battery and only five pounds, it is deceptively easy to carry about.  I'd kept my large battery box and secured the new battery with foam packaging that came from another story.

Light, Easy to Carry- What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

As usual, my eight foot step ladder was lashed to the port stern cleat and checked for square.  Surprises are unwelcome on the HideAway where ladders are concerned.

I'd been trying to remember to count my steps down the ladder but, you laugh, I usually forget how many steps the fool ladder has.

Airborne

My left arm holding the battery case close to my side, the other flailing about like it had nothing else to do.  "Drop and roll! --- Drop and roll!" -My coach from well more than a half century ago yelled. "Smack the mat with your free hand!"   So I did.

On My Back - The Quiet

I see HideAway towering above me on its trailer, the battery, partially in its case, five feet away, the ladder hanging from its tie down.   Taking a deep breath and a inventory of the rocks embedded in my right leg and arm, I was not badly damaged. Thanks Coach! Explaining the rocks and blooded clothes to my wife would be difficult though and could result in a loss of private time to mess about with the HideAway.

In My Defense

I offer the above photographs taken just the other day.  I draw your attention to how the value and color of the second step from the bottom is close to the color and value of the sun bleached asphalt- screws, bolts and bits of concrete block notwithstanding of course.  Weak as it is- it was all I had until the color yellow came to mind.

She did find me out of course, but she could not expound about my misadventure as she had done much the same thing trimming a tree some years ago.  Sail on Silver Girl - Life is Good.

Sailing HideAway: Healing the Keel

During a difficult recovery in bad weather we managed to drive HideAway's  keel into the wrong side of a side bunk.  Correcting the navigational error caused gouges to the keel and our serenity.  Since HideAway, a Com-Pac 23, hull #2, has a fixed keel with concrete ballast protected by 40 years accumulation of bottom paint, most of the damage was limited to paint scratches.  Except this one:

Macro photography revealed the deepest gouge did not penetrate the fiberglass fixed keel.  It did, however remove the gelcoat.  I acquired a quart of Total Boat  Total Fair epoxy fairing compound from Jamestown Distributers. The product is available in pint, quart and gallon sizes.  I feared a pint may not be adequate so I bought the quart.  Clever marketing, these Jamestown folks.

The product performs as advertised.  Its easy to mix and forgiving enough that precise measurement does not seem necessary as long as the mix turns a UNIFORM light green.  If is doesn't just add a dab of the other color, yellow or blue, and mix, making sure all of the product on your mixer is consumed. Ya'all are familiar with 3M Marine Adhesive Sealants I'm sure.  Total Fair is just as gooey and sloppy!  You have been warned.

A word about safety equipment:  You need it.  Especially the mask and chemical resistant long gloves. The product is easy to sand, but that really means lots of fine dust.  My orbital sander connects to a shop vacuum and that helps a lot, but your lungs will thank you if you wear the proper mask.

Sailing HideAway Trailer Tire Wheel Covers

As if you don't have enough to worry about as a small sailboat owner!

The first set wheel covers crinkled like cheap wrapping paper.  Trouble was not far behind a Florida sunset.  Add  strong cold front wind to the equation and you have shredded wheel covers.

Here's our answer -- Spend More Money - No surprise there.

Wheel covers are considerably cheaper than the four brand new tires they protect.

Will the new vinyl covers work????

Please visit our Sailing Hideaway Zazzle store below - Gotta save for those tire wheel covers don't you know!

Sailing HideAway: Non-Skid Topside Painting

In the days since retirement began I have realized a certain calm in the knowledge that not much absolutely has to be accomplished right this day. I set my cruise control to the speed limit and watch the races. Red light? No matter. Traffic - Ha, who cares? Life is less stressful until a project appears on the horizon. Then another and pretty soon a not-to-be-amended-schedule appears.

I allocated a week to paint the HideAway's non skid areas and I'm on schedule. Each morning I pack a lunch, tools and paint stuff and drive to work. Wait a minute. To where??? Yep, that's what it feels like and I don't like it. Granted, we are racing summer. It's mid April and already the temperature is almost 90 degrees and the UV index is 'Fry in 10 minutes'. The Florida humidity is not here yet but getting closer by the day- I can feel it.

In our recent videos you may have noticed the HideAway could use attention of the painting kind. If you're contemplating such a project this video is for you. In it we discuss the joys of calculating the amount of non skid powder to mix with 2/3s of a quart of expensive paint, peruse products used and how they performed.

Although the weather looks good in the video, the wind was gusting 18-25, shaking the boat and blowing paint onto various items that did not require painting. Did I mention the paint is very, very expensive? Warning: There is no video of watching paint dry -- Sorry.

Next up will be cockpit drains and rewiring the mast. Yippeeeee!

Motor Won't Start- Rocks Ahead! What Now?? Sailing HideAway

In this time of great troubles we take solace in sailing on the HideAway.  Our Youtube channel, Sailing HideAway, tells the story and captures spirit of sailing a small cruising boat in a close to real time format .  Lately we've been making the videos much longer for our own sanity. Sorry to say this does increase the number of ads you will see.  We are trying to use advertising to off set some of the sailing costs.  "Liking" our video or leaving a comment  improves our visibility in the great ocean of Youtube.  Hope you enjoy this -- Cast off all lines, concerns and duties!   It's time to sail the HideAway!   SMALL BOATS ROCK!

You've been sailing all day. You pass the outer channel markers before you try to start the old outboard. The seventh pull produces a smoky cough, then silence.

You're pulling 4 knots on a rising tide with a weak wind both pushing the boat towards the sharp turn between the rocks into the marina. Your jib is wrapped on deck- the main partially down. The wind or the tide will surely push you on the rocks- It matters not which. What Now??? #sailinghideaway #outboardwon'tstart #gulfportflorida #svhideaway

You can use your own image and text.  It's easy - I did it!

Changing House Battery to LiFePO4 - Sailing HideAway

*** UPDATE: Be sure to calculate your amp hour requirements. I forgot all about the AM/FM radio and a fan, both of which have electrical addictions. Fortunately, we seldom use either. The Hideaway does not have a powered self steering unit or an electric start outboard. My battery choice may not work for you. Do your research carefully, a friend told me the battery shuts down if the alternator charging rate is too high. My new smart charger starts at 1.5 amps then follows one of 7 programs.

Hurricane Irma left us with a week of no electrical power, but fortunately no serious damage. On the HideAway we finish our hurricane preparations returning only after the storm has passed.  Doing so this time reveled a dead house battery.  Most stores were closed, however we found battery place with an open back door and serenated by a large generator and shop fans, we bought a new battery.

Batteries do not last long in the Florida tropics.  We were pleased that this one took five years before retirement.   As you know, Hideaway lives on a trailer when she's not sailing. Swapping out the lead acid 60lb battery is not for the faint of heart.  Climbing the eight foot "Ladder of Doom" while listening to the acid swish about is not much better than winching them in and out using the main halyard.

Sailing HideAway The Water Indicator - Evinrude 8HP

Usually when something breaks a simple fix is not part of the repair.  The last episode of pee-less performance required risky surgery that included removal and replacement of six bolts, an elbow, gasket, and plate.  Not to mention the invention of a tool to clean out the offending growth.

Find out how the Hideaways fared in this video.
